Saturday, October 15, 2011 was the Chicago Police and Fire Departments' first annual 911 Chili-Eating Contest, the proceeds from which will benefit a Chicago firefighter's nephew, a soldier who lost both his legs to an IED in Afghanistan.
The contest was 5 on 5, held at longtime south-side Chicago restaurant Lindy's Chili, whose owners, along with 9th District Officer Al Garza, helped organize the event.
The cops were the first to arrive: current and former 9th District officers Tommy Laurin, Bob Costello, Jim Jakstavich, Andy Dobda, and Nick Gould.
Once the firefighters came, the contest began. The team who could eat the most bowls in 9 minutes 11 seconds (9:11) were the winners. And the winners were: THE COPS! 41 bowls to 36. With firefighters' legendary cooking skills, you'd think they'd be better at eating. Perhaps not ;)
But everybody had a great time, and our 9th District officers proved, once again, that they are the finest. Next year at Lindy's, guys. See you there.
I almost forgot. Unbelievably, two of the winning cops still had a little room left after eating nearly nine bowls of chili apiece (!?), and filled it up with a bowl of Gertie's ice cream for dessert.
If you've got a hankering for Lindy's Chili or Gertie's Ice Cream, you can find both of them at 3685 S. Archer, 2 blocks east of Western and just north of McKinley Park, across the street from Jewel/Osco. And they serve the best chocolate-covered bananas (milk or dark chocolate) on earth.
buncha fat cops, I bet a criminal could out rum them any day including six feet of snow!

@beansworlds Nobody can outrun the one-two combination of a two-way radio and a Police Interceptor Crown Vic;) And for situations when it's called for, I believe marksmanship is taught at the Police Academy?
