Yep Ruffian's fateful race same track/distance 2 days later. Kinda eerie...

If these were broadcast on OTB tv in NYC, my grandpa probably watched these in the months leading up to his death--He was a big fan of OTB and died October '75.

cf1970, Another great post! Thankyou for sharing all these races. These are legends running! I of course always hear about these great horses but was too young or not born yet. If it wasn't for you sharing I would have never seen these great races! I can't thankyou enough! Take care & keep up the great work!

Great clip -- as always, thanks for sharing!
I think this ended up being the fastest ever 10 furlongs run with one turn from the long chute at Belmont. Two minutes flat had been the record for a long time. The ill-fated Ruffian-Foolish Pleasure match race was also started from the chute on this same weekend, but Belmont soon started phasing out that configuration, and by a few years later, all 10 furlong races started on the turn.
Meaning that Forego's record won't be broken!

Well, like people, some horses don't fully mature or reach their peak at the tender age of 3! Some of the best horses are at their best at 5 or 6, when they're finished adults. It's too bad handicappers had to put such extraordinary weight on Forego. I'm surprised his owners agreed to run him anyway.

You know, it's a shame that he had to be born in the same year as Secretariat and Sham. He could've been a lot better in his 3 year old races if they weren't there. But, he sure did well in the years afterwards!
