I heard from a CA resident that the PCT doesn't run through towns like the AT, and the towns tend to be thousands of feet lower and quite a ways away from the trail.
My solution for the AT skips the expensive maps. I'll be relying on the free, single national park brochure map, a donation payment elevation profile map--15 pages of 20 mile sections printed front and back in color at Office Max for $10, and the hiker companion--chopped binder and divided into mail dropped sections.
