battery life is on average 600-1000 hours continuous, so lets do the math, if it didn't have the auto 4 hour and 8 hour shut offs and just ran continously you'd change your battery every 25 to 41 days.. once a month battery change is pretty freakin easy on a schedule.. no its not 80,000 hours like the Comp M4 by aimpoint, but change the batteries on the first or last day of each month and your fine.. and that's with daily 24 hours use, assumeing you use it only 8 hours a day thats 3 months

can you get a flip to the side scope with a reticle, i have been looking to get something for my dad like that for xmas

they don't bother with a flip to the side optic, because you can use the iron sights right through the optic if the battery dies or it gets damaged
that said, anything is possible
