The once massive pro-democracy protests in Bahrain has been reduced to small clashes between youth and police in predominantly Shia areas.

Security forces have allegedly launched a brutal crackdown on protesters with beatings and sweeping arrests. Nearly 1000 demonstrators have been imprisoned, among them doctors, artists and lawyers.

The UN High Commissioner for Human rights Navi Pillay says severe torture is being used against prisoners, and he is calling on the Bahraini government to stop intimidating and harassing human rights defenders and political activists.

May Welsh reports.

  • @alnam1000 we want bahrain to be free .........iran back off

  • Peace? Getting a foreign force to crack down one your own people? What peace are you talking about, there are many poor people in Bahrain you should view documentaries which were produced before these protests. Besides, everyone supported Tunisia, Egypt, Yemen, Libya, in their protests so why is it different all of a sudden when it get to Bahrain? Come on... we all know what this is about,

  • @lifeovdeath

Dear you have as you called "something called democracy" But you dont know what your missing!!

Demographic changes!!! I dont agree with you....but if this was true you are still living the best life ever and electing parliament members like this guy,,, please let us continue living in peace

  • @alnam1000 all of khaleej is like this, i went to kuwait when they eat they throw 3/4 of the food out, now thats only one person and thats not our point, the people want something called democracy, thats when a person elects his government, the bahraini government has been working on changing the demographics of the country for along time, using a foreign force to harass your own people, thats absolutely the biggest crime any government could do to its people!
