Hi! Im veterinarian and Purina Cat Chow Mentor Doctor Karen Sueda. Kittens and cats are lively and curious by nature and, sometimes, that can lead them into trouble. Theyre going to explore their home environment, so lets make it as fun and safe as we can. It sounds funny, but you might want to get down to your cats level and take a look around from that vantage point. Its a fun exercise to do with children to get them familiar with how your new kitten will see their world. You might see things youd ordinarily overlook like frayed or poorly insulated wires, sharp objects, or small items like rubber bands or string that may harm your cat if swallowed. Youll also want to look up, too. Cats love high places and they are bound to explore near window sills, shelves, counter tops, and doors. Make sure windows are securely screened and keep your cat off of high decks, balconies, or upper porches. All poisons should be securely stored out of your kittens reach. The list of poisons is long and includes common household items and plants. You can find a detailed list at KittenChow.com, but some common ones are: Antifreeze; medications; mothballs and pesticides. Household plants like lilies, poinsettia, and ivy are also dangerous. Remember, a smart and curious cat can open cabinets, so keep that in mind when you choose a safe location. The best thing you can do to safeguard your new kitten? Keeping her indoors. Statistics prove shes likely to live a much longer life and thats good for both of you. Thanks for watching! And remember that giving your kitten lots of love and affection will help build the foundation for your happy, healthy life together.
