The new City of Orinda office building will provide office space for a number of the city's essential public services, such as the Administrative Office and the Police. It is also a radical exercise in seismic design innovation.
The building utilizes a hybrid wood and steel frame. The rocking steel brace frames are the latest generation frames of restoring systems. Vertical post tension cables provide restoring forces and minimize permanent deformation. Fusible elements at the base of the frame absorb energy. After they deform, they can then be unbolted and replaced.
In addition, the structure is also being designed for a LEED Silver rating. The concrete used has over 50% of the concrete replaced with slag. Designing for seismic durability also increases the lifespan of the building, minimizing construction costs and carbon impact over time.
