  • Sorry. I should have specified "non-fictional only please."

    Thanks anyways.

  • If anyone knows of a better science popularizer, please point me in their direction.

**Purely rhetorical, as I don't expect anyone to know of a person who can even approach his combination of communication skills, knowledge and personality.**

  • @matt2884 I dunno about Dawkins not being cold. When he says something to make the crowd laugh, he cuts them off in mid guffaw to carry on and hardly manages more than a slight twinge at the corner of his mouth. The guy has a sense of humour drier than the Atacama. I know it, but those he'd like to educate don't, and that really limits his effectiveness.

That's where Tyson can come in and use the vast base of arguments that Dawkins formulates to win the hearts and minds of the uneducated.

Execpt for the pale blue dot, I have not watched much of carl sagan up until the last few days. He is starting to grow on me though.

  • @3point14rat

The fun uncle, I like that discription.

I agree Dawkins comes off as a bit cold, but I think it has more to do with how well spoken he is. Not many people are accustomed to the level of sophistication in speech and are intimidated or turned off by it. Hitchens I find hard to follow sometimes when he is in a debate. Its almost as though he dances around with words While making his point. I find Sam Harris' ideas to be very refined and he translates them well into words.

  • @matt2884 I like the youthful energy of Tyson. I have a real soft spot for Sagan so I'll probably always consider him the 'best', but there's no doubt that we have a great group of popularizers out there right now.

Tyson is a very different voice than the coldly clinical Dawkins, the awesomely nasty Hitchens or the smooth wordsmith Harris.

He's like the fun uncle that you love to visit.

I think Neil Degrasse Tyson does a very good job of communicating science and instilling wonder among everyone who listens to him. Not to mention he is very charismatic. Dr. Tyson has even been compared to Carl Sagan.

  • Carl Sagan's voice is just pure beast.

  • @lamuziq I was assuming that my tone would show how I was only saying it to show how much I loved Carl's work. I think everyone else could see that I meant it as an exaggertation for effect (see, hyperbole).

I officially apologize for my assumption that my writing could be interpreted as I intended. I freely admit that there are other great science communicators out there. But I very much appreciate the many other popularizers that have been brought to my attention, some are new to me.

  • @3point14rat Are you disappointed that people are providing real answers that make your comment look a bit....Daft? I'm surprised you haven't come back and proposed that you stand corrected. Because honestly? You've been corrected; there are many people who're carrying the torch that Sagan helped light. And just as Sagan did, the modern astronomers are standing on the shoulders of giants before them.

  • You can almost see the statistical value, as the episodes move forward the views go down.Is it a direct representation of the normal persons attention span? The amount of time the given person has to continue on with a train of thought?

  • @3point14rat Michiu Kaku is probably the closest person to Sagans level of intelligence and personality. Different personalities, of course, but Kaku also has a somewhat charming personality.
