  • ive done grandfather a handful of times and never had any encounters with bears. ive heard mitchell is a hot spot though. what are the odds of stumbling upon a black bear in the fall on mitchell?

  • Bears? I have hiked in this range (Black Mountains) many times over the years (including last weekend) and have yest to see even one bear! However, I have seen some signs of their presence (poop, etc,). Stay vigilant... the State Park rangers have posted warning signs along the trails.

  • Yes, very close to where the Mt. Mitchell trail leaves the Buncombe Horse trail for the final ascent to the summit. I have climbed this trail many times in all seasons and always there's someting new to experience!

  • Red Orchestra, anyone?

  • That does look like camp alice.

  • The last time I made this hike was in Feb, we camped out just outside of the park area and it got down to 4 degrees, pretty brutal. It didn't snow but the ground was covered with ice and snow and the summit was as windy as ever. Great hike though, prob my favorite in the state.

  • awesome o live mt. mitchell...was this at camp alice?
