(I did my first high altitude flight on a 160 Duck, and had to run like hell to keep from whacking the nose... a fence in the way woulda made it a crash)
The instruction books do say better downwind than downhill.
I have had the wind sock follow me in a 360° as I try to line up for approach - you can't just throttle back up and shoot the approach over again. Fortunately the wind is usually light when it is that extremely shifty.
The audio is awesome! I can hear my friend saying, "OH Pete!", and I stretch the fence, and then!

...target fixation....? Or were there persons/gliders in the rest of LZ which 'forced'

Yup. Every situation is different.
Wasn't a bad crash anyways.
