and they learn from it, or else they won't make a hunter. Kick on at that bank?? firstly you'd want to be a pretty dam accurate rider, miss by a foot or two and you will be jumping straight into the drain cos you won't make it, secondly not much space to land and stop if you come kicking down to that, thirdly you are making the jump far wider than if you let them crawl in a little and jump across and finally if you mess up at speed = horse with broken neck and rider going home in an ambulance!

@ugged2k9 if ye have a good horse u don't need to be kicking onto any tin leave the horse off n if ye have a good one they'd do that no bother sure ye see the hunts woman n the whips jumped that perfect

The sides drains were so muddy/slippery the horses had to go down before they could go up! the widest part of the drain was at least 8ft wide ! In those conditions a horse has to think before he can jump!
