wll couple years ago the drum circle was good but,now it sucks cause all they do is smoking mariguana and, drink if u really wont a nice drum circle go 2 hunigton beach drum circle!
Ha! You got it with that degeneration to a never-ending 2/4. Let's face it, most drum circles suck from a musical perspective because there are very few drummers and mostly thumpers at them who think they can drum and turn it into a pseudo religious event. Really sad and frustrating.
Sorry... must agree with mesopotamia. Take a gander around Youtube and you'll notice that all of the drum circles tend to gravitate toward a simple, boring 2/4 rhythm. It's precisely because anyone and everyone is welcome, regardless of (lack of) rhythmic vision; they just BANG AWAY. Anyone who has been playing for a time will notice this, and those of us who are on a quest appreciate it when other people listen at least as much as they play.
I've drummed at Venice Beach for close to ten years now - it has it's good days. The very definition of an open drum circle is that everyone is welcome - novice, hacks, AND beginners - and there are no rules (don't ever tell another drummer how to drum!) except for respect each other and must have a good time. If you don't like how someone sounds, learn to tune them out and take it all in in stride and grace. Love, Peace, Hugs, & Drums!
I agree with you. I was taken back a little by the first comment saying it sounded horrible. All drum circles create beautiful music whether or not people are "good" at it. Thanks for the comment
Not quite dude, drum circles are about expressing yourself and creating a righteous groove. Good drummers (whatever that means) are not required for a nice groove to surface. Only positive vibes are required. As a fellow drummer you are welcome in San Fran - one love.
I want to go next week. Is it only on Saturday and Sundays? What about Friday?

The Venice Beach drum circle is one of the biggest I've seen. It really picks up when the sun starts going down!
