Sebastian Coe .1000 Metre World Record. Oslo,July,1980

Apologies for the not brilliant video quality,but it's all I got! Going into the Moscow Olympics Coe was rounding up nicely with this World Record for the 1000 metres in a time of 1.13.4, half a second under Rick Wohlhuter's previous WR set in 1974. Coe thus became the only man in history to have consecutively held the 800,1000, 1500 and mile world records. This distinction lasted slightly less than an hour when Steve Ovett stepped on the track and said "ta,I'll have the mile,then !"

Ah, i think you mean 2: 13.4 for 1000 meters., you would need a motorcycle to do a 1: 13.4!

You know what was said at the end?

Well Ovett did take Coe's Mile World Record with 3 minutes 48.8 seconds!!! Sublime

Coe wasn't fully recovered from a chest infection when he ran this, and was still on antibiotics. It didn't help that the first 400m was far too quick and he received little help from drafting. You can see he was anxious when he kept looking over his shoulder from about 500m out. After this race he held the 800m, 1000m 1500m and 1 Mile WR's. The only man before or since to ever achieve this. Then, an hour later, Ovett took the Mile WR! Great days for British athletics.
