A sample of clips for discussion. High Quality version here ... http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=wGNrNDiw-DI&fmt=18

Not meant to be my best efforts ... more to show successes, limitations and considerations.

Notes on taking and making 3D video

1. I'm using 2 still cameras in movie mode mounted on a small bar side by side. Sadly, it's difficult to get identical zoom settings and this can sometimes make the viewing experience a bit uncomfortable. When the zoom settings are well matched I get good results. Easier in a wide angle setting.

2. Some clips suffer I think because the cameras have not been pointing in exactly the same direction ... most noticeable when there's an horizon in shot.

3. Close up work requires some 'toe-in' of the cameras ... you can't then adjust to a more distant scene ... and visa versa.

4. One camera uses Image Stabilisation, the other doesn't :( Would love to have it on both.

5. To sync the left and right clips I simply click my fingers in view of both lenses ... that moment is easy to find in each clip down to 1/30th sec and allows the clip beginning to be trimmed to that point in QuickTime Pro.

6. The rightmost movie is then copied and 'Added" to the leftmost movie within the left video QuickTime Pro player window. One of the soundtracks is deleted, and video 2 is offset 640 pixels. With both clips in sync and playing in the same window the stereo movie can now be clipped further to tidy up the beginning and ends. The whole thing can be cut and pasted into existing 3D clips to build the movie.

7. It seems that the best effects are achieved when there are moving objects at varying distances from say 2m to 30m ... if everything is a long way off the 3d effect is minimal ... if some objects are too close viewing becomes more difficult ( the cameras are unable to adjust their viewing angle, unlike our eyes ). Shots where there are no well defined left/right/top/bottoms seem to work very well ( i.e the duck on the water ).

Thanks for reading ... comments welcome ... will add more 'findings' as I discover them :)

Please note ... this all refers to the 2 camera method ... not the single clip method used in some of my other videos.

  • I second the recommendation to correct the vertical misalignment with stereovideomaker. The alignment is off just enough to cause my eyes to "almost" sync the two pics in crossed view mode but not off enough for me to totally bail out/reject the paired images. Still...you've got excellent subject material to work with. Would like to see more...

  • @hwugh1 Yeah ... sadly SMM doesn't easily run on Macs, nor does it read the QT files produced by the cameras. See my latest 3D video filmed with just 2 iPod Nanos ... it's much better ... Cheers

  • This is not a cross eye format. Cross eye forrmat uses two seperate frames, not overlapping green/red

Don't try cross eye with this one, you'll only get a headache

  • You can now view many 3D videos here on YT in a variety of formats ... you clearly had the anaglyph option selected.

  • crossed eye is best!

  • There is severe vertical misalignment with your cameras. this will cause headaches to people watching it cross-eye format or even with 3D glasses. Use software like "stereovideomaker" to correct it.

    all the best

  • The camera's zooming points are completely different, and so is the contrast in both frames. This can cause eye damage or headaches to viewers. Please correct or remove this. Thank you.

  • I liked the first scene. Water almost looked like it was going to spill from the video window!!!

  • @shooterman100ps3 You add this tag ... yt3d:enable=true

  • how do you get those options on your video?

  • how do you get those options on your video?

  • instabile cameras

  • you have to change the 3d format

  • my brain hurts!
