There is a Paradise in the Caribbean called Vieques. This beautiful island is part of Puerto Rico. The main languages are spanish and english. The currency is the US Dollar and the gratuity is 18%. Tap water is fresh, clean and drinkable. Satellite TV and internet friendly. To get there, you can head North East from the SJU international airport, and take a 45 minute ride to the José Aponte de la Torre Airport in Ceiba (An Aprox. 10 minutes flight), or via Ferry (Aprox. 1 hour) from Fajardo. Once you get to Vieques you must rent a car (SUV preferable) to get around.

A great part of this Island was once occupied by the US Armed Forces. But, with the perseverance of the local residents, and through civil disobedience they forced the US Armed Forces to leave the island. Now, the pristine turquoise beaches are a paradise for travelers.

There is one mayor hotel (Starwood's W Retreat & Spa) and plenty of guest houses to choose from. I personally recommend Cookies Paradise, located at the top of the mountain with breathtaking views. The culinary experience is overwhelming with a daily catch available at almost every other restaurant.

Downtown (Isabel II) is located at the northern part of the island and most of the secluded beaches stretch from the north east to the southern coastline. The Esperanza Boardwalk is located at the south with plenty of restaurants and souvenir shops to choose from. Don't forget to visit the bioluminescent Bay in a kayak tour, it's a once in a lifetime experience, and if you like horseback riding you'll enjoy a ride along the Wildlife Refugee.

  • Kermit, I respect your opinion but totally disagree with you. There's plenty of stuff to do in Vieques, even if you plan to make it your primary home.

  • Hi Pauline. Thxs for the comments. The song is "Clocks by Coldplay ft. Buena Vista Social Club"
