This was the first time I fired up my Primus 5 paraffin stove after restoring it. I'm not sure exactly how old it is but I'm guessing it's a 1960s model. The smoke it gave off when it first got hot was from the fresh heat-resistant paint on the cooking ring.

  • Hi Alex,What a lovely polite reply.I have never put a comment on U tube before and to get a reply and so quick has pleased me no end.I found your vidio while looking for pressure pump leather washers. No luck so made some myself today.Soaked leather then pressed into a tube with rounded end rod,cut surplus ,heated to dry out while in tube, removed, made hole to take pump spindle, assembled, worked good. How exciting.(Don't get out much)Must make vidio. Do you camp in Cornwall where I live.?Chris

  • Hi Chris, good stuff with making your own pump leather; that's something I haven't tried yet. I bought mine from a chap called Sefa in Turkey. He sells on eBay under the ID "sefaudi". They are very well made. I haven't camped in Cornwall but I have stayed in the Penzance and Land's End youth hostels.

  • Waiting to boil,I wonder what sad thaughts ran through the mossey glades of your mind

  • Normally when camping I'd either potter about getting food ready to cook, or I'd just kick back and relax until I hear the pleasing whistle of the kettle. When I made the video I was thinking, "Damn, this is taking a long time. Nobody is going to sit through this. Maybe I should say something - but what? Won't it seem odd if I say nothing for the first half of the video and then suddenly start rambling about stoves? Why didn't I write a script first?"
