It seems the point of this song is that he believes God isn't there because of all the horrible things that happen. This is a common problem among people, religion is the #1 cause for war, right above women, and people argue. This song explains one half 'did you make mankind after we made you?' 'you're always letting us humans down; the wars you bring, the babes you drown' etc. Then the other half has lines like 'The lord giveth and the lord taketh away' and ...

Essentially your standpoint is to, nomatter what reality may be, to pump your head with whatever makes life less scary like an opium addict.
Thats why I look down on religious people, they are the ultimate cowards, choosing their safe little fantasies to avoid reality at any cost.
