Barley the PWD at nine weeks old... sit, high 5 and down

Barley, our Portuguese Water Dog, practicing some commands at nine weeks old (July 6, 2008). Here he's doing sit, high 5 (well, high 10, then high 5) and down. Good boy! :o)

Porties are extremely smart and will learn quickly. Shortly after they learn something, though, they will start acting like they have no idea what you are talking about... unless of course the treats are to their liking. My PWD is a complete gentleman in public and folks think he's amazingly well behaved. But at home I have to keep letting him know I'm boss. One slip of inconsistency and he will literally think he's on top forever.

This dog is adorable and extremely smart for such a little pup great job training him. I'm thinking of getting one myself plus I'm also Portuguese so it makes me like them more haha.

Aw, thank you! He's a GREAT dog, we really love him!!! He's 18 months old now and has grown up so much from that fuzzy little guy in the video! :o)

LOL, thanks... we used lots of treats, praise and positive reinforcement! :o) (Plus he's a very smart little guy!)

Porties are very smart and love people so much they are willing to do almost anything unless they don't feel like it. People thought I was nuts when I was enforcing the heel. Command. In the course of one city block I would get the dog to heel 5 times.
