In this video, Mahalo's Windows expert Sean Hewitt shows you how to use your mouse to navigate through your computer.
Introduction to Your Mouse
---------------------------------------------------------------------
When operating in Windows 7, a computer mouse is used to navigate and interact with items on the computer screen. The mouse allows users to open files and programs, change settings, move objects and perform other functions with a point-and-click motion.
A mouse generally has two buttons: a left (primary) button and a right (secondary) button.
Occasionally, a mouse may have a wheel in between the two buttons, used to scroll down documents and web pages.
To allow for movement, the
computer mouse is set on a roller ball for multi-directional maneuvering. The mouse's movements are directly related to the pointer on the computer screen: as the user moves the mouse, the pointer moves accordingly.
Basic Mouse Functions
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Pointing
To point to an object, the mouse is moved until the arrow on
the computer screen hovers over the object. Most objects will then display an information box. When pointing to a link, the arrow
will change into a pointing hand. This means that the link only needs a single click.
Clicking
Mouse functions are initiated by pointing to an object and
clicking or double-clicking the appropriate button. There are four types of clicks: left click,
left double-click, right click and drag. Left click is used to select or highlight an item. The user need only point and click the primary button once. Left double-click is used to open an
item. It is necessary to click twice
quickly. Right click opens a list of
options relating to an object: open, delete, rename, etc.
Dragging
Dragging or moving an item is done by pointing to the item, pressing the primary
button and holding it down.
The item can then be dragged anywhere on the screen while holding the button. The button is released to leave the object is in the desired location.
Changing Mouse Settings
---------------------------------------------------------------------
It is possible to change the mouse settings to suit user preferences. From the mouse menu, Windows operators can change button functions and click-speed settings, alter the appearance of
the pointer, and change pointer movement settings. The mouse menu can be accessed by clicking the Start button, then clicking on Control Panel, then Hardware, then Mouse. From the mouse menu,
users can select Buttons to adjust button
functions, Pointers to alter the
look of the pointer, or Pointer Options
to change how the pointer moves/works.
