Well, I listened to the sound in the intro to Cannon Fodder for the Game Boy Color, and I noticed the audio was way off. In the comments section, a Youtuber had posted how to get the audio to sound right. I did so, and voila, it's restored.

What I did here was open the ROM up in my audio editor as an unsigned 8-bit mono PCM file, at 5000 Hz. The Youtuber said 4000, but it sounded off. Hats off to the user, by the way!

I couldn't get the video and audio to sync as well as I wanted to, but I swear this is the exact same audio that's in the ROM.

An idea was that the Game Boy Advance emulators create a "buzzing" noise for Game Boy Color audio in PCM format. I think that's wrong, as in KiGB has the same buzzing noise.

Another theory is that the Game Boy is spending all it's resources on decoding the video, so the audio quality degrades. This issue, obviously, is not here, as the audio editor only processed the audio.

Thumbs up for audio restoration!

  • This is because I ripped the games PCM audio a hellava while ago, isn't it. :p

  • @flygonbreloom Yup, but I ripped the audio myself :P. I did use your post on Retro to guide me.

  • @james42519: yeah, it's called using a PCM sample. It's the same thing they did to make drum sounds in games. It's where you take an audio sample and you compress it into a format of which a computer can read, in this case a Game Boy.

Tl;dr: you take the audio and smoosh it into something the Game Boy can process.

  • The most shitter game i ever play

  • Dude like the sounds, the other videos on this intro suck... :)

  • `that,s what,s impresses me sooo much about the gbc,not only can it produce famouse bleep sound, but it also can generate 1 4bit mono wave digital sound like this, yes it,s sounds noise duo limmited space and bits, but it,s still impressive,

now remastering 1/4bit into 16bit sound is mind blowing

  • @JasemanTheHedgehog Do you mind if I can rerip the video and audio and repost it onto my YouTube channel with even higher quality? (Check out what I've got going there to see what I mean, heh.)
