  • I have d5100 ...my goal is to have nice low light indoor portraits as well as out door ...I heard that this 50 mm 1.8 g doesnt have the auto focus... secondly it has an issue wiht the sensor crop -factor....as compare to the 35mm 1.8...... whats your opinion on that .. are both these factors a big deal ? I am confused as you said this lense has a builin motor...on other reviews it says it doesnt have autofocus.

  • @adyhallmark The 50mm 1.8D does not have autofocus, however, this is the 50mm 1.8G When using a D5100 you must be lens that have the AF-S motor built in the lens in order to auto focus. Make sure if you get the 50mm 1.8 you get the AF-S one. When referring to crop factor, for the D5100, you will have the multiply any lens you buy but 1.5 to determine the actual focal length. Thus a 35mm becomes a 52.5mm (almost standard) and 50mm becomes a 75mm (short telephoto lens)

Since you know what i want to achieve and keeping in mind the crop factor... what would you suggest me between 35 mm AFS 1.8g and 50 mm AFS 1.8g? Thanks

  • @adyhallmark I would start with the 35mm AF-S 1.8g just because it is more of a standard lens on a D5100 it will work great for everyday situations. The 50mm will be more of a telephoto lens and won't be as useful for everyday use.

  • @adyhallmark In short if you want autofocus you want to get the Nikkor AF-S 50mm 1.8G but do not get the Nikkor AF 50mm 1.8D because that will not autofocus

  • I have a d5100 and so far I have the 18-55 kit lens, 55-300 and the 50 1.8g. They are pretty good lenses. Tho the 55-300 is a lil slow to focus. But I got the 55-300 for $249 instead of $399

  • @Rockbandforce8
