If you want to return values from any SQL source you need to understand the most fundamental statement.

The select statement by and large is quite easy to understand but bit by bit, line by line it can become a behemoth which can drive you potty. This video is a gentle starting point to understand the basics of the select. Subsequent videos will build on this basic concept.

This is one of many videos which can be seen at PCTeach.me. Come join the gang!

  • @keeponfda Hey, thanks! Glad I could be of help, have a look at my other SQL vids, let me know if your stuck on something. And tell your friends about my channel ;o)

  • @keeponfda Sorry for the delay! I am glad it helped and good luck with your class. Any questions you know where I am :)

  • I am sql beginner and when I go to mysql.com to download the program o practice, I don' know what I am supposed to download? It is supposed to be free for practice according to my book "SAMs Teach Yourself SQL in 24 hrs". Thanks

  • @ellie3637 Hi Ellie, first off remember that the videos here are Microsoft SQL rather than MySQL. Most of what these videos will still work but there are som minor differences. So, watch the vid but if you get stuck look at the relevant chapter in your book. With regards MySQL you need to download: dev.mysql.com/downloads/mysql/ and make sure you download the "community server". Good Luck

  • You are wonderful! Thanks for these well done videos. We love you man! :)

  • @ellie3637 Hi Ellie, erm if it's comments about the video here is the place ;o). If you are asking about putting a narrative in your code to explain each bit you are typing this is done by typing "--" at the beginning of the line. Eg...

    Select * from table

    -- this selects all fields from tablea

    Alternativley you can put a block of comment by starting with /* and finish with */ Eg...

    /* blah bal blah

    Echo echo echo */

    Hope this helps
