James Kalm grew up out west in the late sixties, and was a fledgling member of the "love generation". As such, it was impossible for him to avoid the influence of Underground Comix. "ZAP: Masters of Psychedelic Art 1965-74" is more that just a tour down nostalgia lane, it is a nice chunk of 1960s West Coast culture, reflecting the norms, trends and social issues that were most pressing for the youth of that day. With the publication of Zap Comix, there was not only an artistic energy released but a DIY entrepreneurial program as well. Several of these artists have gone on to be lionized as harbingers of today's cutting edge "Low Brow", and Pop Surrealism.
