[Please read] Inger Stevens (as Emiley Pennington) and Dan Blocker (as "Hoss" Cartwright) lend their superlative talents to an early "glory" episode of the TV Western series BONANZA. A magnificent take on the "Beauty and the Beast" theme, dignified and noble.

Initially regarding "Hoss" with aversion, Emiley is won over by his kindly, thoughtful, caring ways. He, in turn, falls in love with her. Discovering she is terminally ill, Emiley tries to spare "Hoss," leaving him one of the most bittersweet memories in the entire history of his character's life on television. Priceless drama.

--Footage excerpted from BONANZA's First Season, Episode Three: "The Newcomers."
--Originally aired on September 26, 1959.
--An inspired script by ace series contributor: Thomas Thompson.
--Thoughtful direction by another who would become a regular series contributor: Christian Nyby.
--Location filming at Big Bear, California.

According to the Leiby "Reference Guide to Televisions BONANZA": 'Before this episode was aired, the public, cast, area brass and network representatives attended a preview at the Granada Theatre in Reno, Nevada.'

BONANZA was created by David Dortort.

  • But keep in mind, sseklof, what "Paramount reps or other sho-biz execs" should be doing has little enough to do with such YouTube- video glimpses. What they WILL do is respond positively to a high-degree of potential consumer demand, so consider petitioning the studio, friend!

  • You are, unfortunately, exactly right. The bottom line is the only one which works. Funny you should mention petition. I had a little experience with a petition that concerned an actress who is much more recognized than Inger. Collected quite a few names, but nothing came of it. That wouldn't stop me from trying again - especially for actors like these two. But as you pointed out, demand has to be massive. Anyway, thanks again for the tribute to Dan and Inger.

  • And you haven't seen the last of Inger from me by a long shot.

  • Hoss was the gentle giant, gosh I loved Dan Blocker!

  • What is the music from at the very end? It is beautiful!!

  • Inga Svenson played the part of Ben's 2nd wife & Hoss mother Ingar & Inger Stevens played the part of his girlfriend Emily. Two different actresses, not the same one at all.

  • What a beautiful, touching episode. Lovely acting by both of them, completely believable. Wow.

  • @BoscoFaith she didn't one was Ingrid Swenson, the other was Ingrid Stevens and the were not the same person

  • "I love you, Hoss.." (Don't we all?)

  • From Inger's eulogy, delivered by Ben Irwin, a quote from Sean O'Casey, an Irish writer she liked:

"Who through every inch of life weaves a pattern of vigor and elation can never taste death, but goes to sleep among the stars ..."

  • Isn´t it funny that she first played his mother and then his girlfriend?

Thx for posting this. I loved to see it again.

  • Will be looking forward to that - have become quite a re-newed fan of Inger's - watched her as a kid on the Farmer's Daughter. Recently read her bio - to me, the coolest of the 60's actresses. Was going to post a couple from Route 66, but don't know anything about legalities and didn't want to step on any toes - the surviving family mostly - less so the industry execs. Would like to see her more recognized and appreciated - great actress, great woman, great soul.
