This video was shot during the third and last phase of flight testing in Newport, OR. The FLS Microjet is the successor to the BD-5J To learn more, visit www.flsmicrojet.com

Due to the song, anyone in Germany will have to view the video on my LEWIS & CLARK PERFORMANCE, LLC Facebook page. Sorry about the inconvenience.

  • Why are you saying the FLS plane is a "predecessor" (came before) the BD-5. It DID NOT! The FLS is derived from the BD-5!

  • @KB4QAA Wow! Thank you so much for pointing out my mistype. I appreciate the feedback and I've made the correction.

  • Is it me or does it seem like this bd is flying horizontal at a slightly nose down attitude? (from 1:00 to 1:10)

  • @umaxen01 I never noticed that in the video before but I see how the video make it look that way. I can assure you that in real life it fly's straight as an arrow and if you like, you can see what I mean in a few recent pictures I recently linked to my LEWIS & CLARK PERFORMANCE Facebook page.

  • i guessed it may have been that the EGT was below full operating level at take off time..What would be the cruise speed for this aircraft , and the rated thrust of the jet motor ?

  • @bowpilot55 Actually it was a full power takeoff with close to a 800C EGT causing the smoke to appear thin. At 600C, the smoke is much more effective. The BD-5 was never designed to be a speed demon but due to it's size, it looks and feels like its doing 300 just sitting still. I usually cruise at 160 KIAS at any altitude with my 265 lbs thrust engine. The higher the altitude, the better the fuel burn and higher TAS. Take a look at my website for more info and follow me on Facebook.

  • BTW, the FLS Microjet looks great! It's nice to see a legacy of the Bede designs live on! If only he had better business acumen he would have owned the the high performance homebuilt market of the 1970's. It's hard to remember but at that time home builts were not very common and mostly rag wing types. Bede was mentioned in every issue of Flying and Air Progress.

  • Several of the BD "kits" show up occasionally for sale, most the prop driven types. i saw the coors BD (Jet) team back in the 80's show (believe there were two of them) nice demo.

  • @bowpilot55 Thanks for the complement. The "blue smoke" is the result of my smoke system. In person, it looks more like a white color but the concentration changes with thrust and mostly exhaust temperatures. For example, the BLUE ANGLES use smoke on takeoff but it's completely invisible until they deselect afterburner.

  • Beautiful aircraft ... wish i had one of them to chase the clouds with... can anyone explain the blue smoke trail at take off? it seems to have cleared in the later part of the clip ....
