Released on August 11, 2006 in India and North America, it stars Amitabh Bachchan, Shahrukh Khan, Rani Mukerji, Preity Zinta, Abhishek Bachchan and Kirron Kher in pivotal roles.Set and mostly filmed in New York City, Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna is a romantic drama film which explores themes of adultery and extramarital affairs. Although more of a moderate success in India which its earnings waning at the box office after the first week of release, the film was a success internationally and in the United States it became the highest grossing Indian film of all time, beating Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham's five year old record. In the United States it grossed over $1.3 million and $1.4 million in the United Kingdom on its opening weekend and was screened in over 1,200 cinemas worldwide.The film was nominated for numerous awards and actor Abhishek Bachchan won the Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award and GIFA Best Supporting Actor Award amongst others with Rani Mukerji winning the IIFA Best Actress Award for their performances in the film.
The film was shown at the Tokyo International Film Festival. The script of the film which received recognition by a number of critics, was invited to be included in the library of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences or more commonly known as the Oscars.
