The Detroit Tigers acquired third baseman Wilson Betemit in a trade with the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday, which could shore up a major need.

General manager Dave Dombrowski said the Tigers gave up two minor-league prospects, Antonio Cruz and Julio Rodriguez, to acquire Betemit.

Dombrowski acknowledged that the Tigers "have scuffled" at third base, where Brandon Inge is hitting .177, and said a decision on the longtime starter's future would be made after Betemit reports to the Tigers for Thursday's game at Minnesota.

Betemit, 29, is hitting .281 with three home runs and 27 RBIs for the Royals. He is a ninth-year veteran.

The Tigers gave up two Class A players to get Betemit, who makes $1 million and will be a free agent after the season. Cruz is a pitcher for the West Michigan Whitecaps, while Julio Rodriguez is a catcher at Lakeland.

Find out what Inge had to say regarding his designation, receive some additional comments from Dombrowski, also discover the thoughts of Mike Valenti and Matt Dery of 97.1 the Ticket who fielded calls from some emotional Tigers fans, who had plenty to say about this topic on Thursday after the decision was made. Also don't miss my take on why I believe the decision to designate Inge for assignment had to be made and where the Tigers go from here. It's all in the Friday edition of the McShan Sports Beat Report.
