Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian president, has made a visit to Syria for talks with his Syrian counterpart, Bashar al-Assad, president, after pledging to help achieve inter-Palestinian reconciliation.

There is also a suggestion Mahmoud Abbas, president, might meet Khaled Meshaal, the Hamas political leader, who is based in Damascus.

As Al Jazeera's Mohamed Vall reports, the visit is an indication of how Syria's role in the Middle East appears to be changing.

  • dragun39, why do you focus on form and ignore substance? This commentator - notwithstanding his accent - always makes me admire Aljazeera for its serious take on world news

  • The sin of dictatorship is greater than all the good any leader can do. Think of Hitler, Stalin, Mao, BouMedien, Saddam, Nasser, the Assads.

If a leader confiscates freedom of speech, he is an enemy of the people, no matter what. Unfortunately, many, may be the majority of Arabs, think of themselves as sheep to be led by a shephered. The government has to provide for them shelter and grass.

Like Hussain, the Assads are dictators, but it is the fault of the sheep who allowed them to be.

  • It isn't like that for everyone. Most people just have no idea what is going on and why.

I agree there is obviously prejudice towards Muslims, but don't underestimate the level of complacency of most people.

  • don't worry about abbas israel/usa/eu countrys

will call him terrorists after they are done killing and taken land from the palestinan ppl they will be done with him. what will the world will do nothing because they are musilm so no one cares for them. it's funny how this world works.

  • Abbas...maybe the Palestinian president,

but he doesn't represent the majority of his people.

Israel is surrounded by hostile neighbors: Lebanon, Syria, Palestine. Israel wants peace with Palestine & Syria so that Iran will be isolated further if Israel-Iran war break out. Israel will use American/French influence throu Michel Suleiman to neutralise Hezbollah.

Mossad motto "By Way of Deception, thou shalt do War"

  • Its good that Abbas show his true face. This visit to terror supporting syrian regime shows Abbas is not serious peace partner.Maybe is better for Israel to treat him like Arafat.

  • dragun39, now that is funny!!!

  • RUlegaleagle you are talking nonsense.

The dictators are in charge in Syria.

Assad doesn't represent the Syrian nation.

The Muslim brothers maybe represent the Syrian nation.

  • praise Allah the adults are in charge, not the morons posting here.

  • Not true, if Syria were to make inroads into alliances with Israel, this would be a legitimate move and take away west's excuse to ignore Syria. Syria can be in peace with Israel, Western ally and a leader of the Arab world. Egypt can, Jordan can, Lebanon for the most part, can. Why not Syria?
