Colours of the Wind from the Disney film, Pocahontas, 1995. Copyright Disney.

Lyrics:

You think I'm an ignorant savage
And you've been so many places
I guess it must be so
But still I cannot see
If the savage one is me
How can there be so much that you don't know?
You don't know ...

You think you own whatever land you land on
The Earth is just a dead thing you can claim
But I know every rock and tree and creature
Has a life, has a spirit, has a name

You think the only people who are people
Are the people who look and think like you
But if you walk the footsteps of a stranger
You'll learn things you never knew you never knew

Have you ever heard the wolf cry to the blue corn moon
Or asked the grinning bobcat why he grinned?
Can you sing with all the voices of the mountains?
Can you paint with all the colors of the wind?
Can you paint with all the colors of the wind?

Come run the hidden pine trails of the forest
Come taste the sunsweet berries of the Earth
Come roll in all the riches all around you
And for once, never wonder what they're worth

The rainstorm and the river are my brothers
The heron and the otter are my friends
And we are all connected to each other
In a circle, in a hoop that never ends

How high will the sycamore grow?
If you cut it down, then you'll never know
And you'll never hear the wolf cry to the blue corn moon

For whether we are white or copper skinned
We need to sing with all the voices of the mountains
We need to paint with all the colors of the wind

You can own the Earth and still
All you'll own is Earth until
You can paint with all the colors of the wind.

  • Historically, Pocahontas was only about 12 or 13 when she allegedly saved John Smith's life. And there is no evidence that they were ever involved romantically. But she DEFINITELY sang this song to him in perfect English and they played with bear cubs and shit.

  • i know this may sound cheesy and stupid to some of you but i'm 16 and for years and years as i've watched these disney movies like pocahontas, aladdin, beauty and the beast, lion king and the many other classics i've started to see that they have these hidden messages these lessons & morals that they want people to learn, to children they may be hidden but older people would notice. and if only people learnt from these movies the world would be a better place. listen to the words of this song..

  • I'm singing this song for the talent show and I'm making up a dance for it too

  • Listen to - ill make a man out of me, mulan

  • @sockpopets I must say, that I am appalled by the European's behaviour then, and the fact that Native American tribes are living in reservations! For God's sake, I feel ashamed that no-one, or I hope some are trying to help, if anyone is, then they have my blessing, and I would gladly help Native American Tribes, heck, I would love to live among them, as one of them, even though I am European, I have a great faith in Native American belief about the Spirits, and I want to apologise for the Euro

  • @007LuisFigo The point of life is to grow... you used alot of words to say that...

  • I remember when Disney videos didnt have stupid cliched comments and people getting all nostalgic about the Disney movies that werent even the best ones, your grandparents witnessed the greats, so shut up and watch the video

  • I feel like a kid again when I hear all these old Disney movie songs. this is my all time favorite though.

  • @maxinNchillaxin In real life she did marry John Rolfe. She died of disease when she went to England. I just pretend I don't know any of this and enjoy the movie.

  • @TbredGrits91 Gratz on being brainwashed by the school system/these type of movies

  • I like Pocahontas, so what if they got their historical facts wrong. It's still their most political and intelligent movie yet, while still catering to kids' entertainment. I think Disney does a good job, not surprising with the millions of dollars they make mind you.
