Heres a simple trading strategy that can be applied to stocks, forex and futures markets.

My studies have consistently shown that two equally bullish charts will perform far differently if one is from a bullish sector while the other breakout is in a bearish group. The favourable chart in the bullish group will often quickly advance 50 to 75 percent while the equally bullish chart in a bearish group may struggle to a 5 to 10 percent gain.

Listen to Stuart McPhee as he discusses how you can best apply this trading strategy in your trading.

  • What software program are you using?

  • @bingosumma MetaStock

  • Stan's use of relative strength always seemed to work in hindsight but usually failed in real time. RS for one sector might be great for the last 3 months but how can you use that to guarantee a rosy future when the major index youre comparing to has been moving sideways for the last year (See TSX '07-'08) and is ready to collapse. Stan never used RS alone . Also, no one ever gives away their secrets, if at all they have any!

  • Don't discount the idea of trading with the trend... I agree everything works better in hindsight but that's not to say that, without good stops, trading with the trend doesn't work.

It does, I know it does :)

  • Quick analogy?

If you were to back football teams at the beginning of the premiership, which ones would you chose?

If you were to back companies at the beginning of a new rally, which ones would you chose?

  • nice... I'll back the winner always.

  • Stan's book is awesome. I have doubled the money I put in my 401k in the past 8 years by following it and reading market sectors.

In 2007 financials were doing poorly while the general market drifted up. Since they capitalize growth activity I knew problems were on the horizon and exited the market probably too early but did not suffer losses. It takes work and passion reviewing things a bit every day but if you don't put it in you should not play.

  • Another important aspect of Stan's approach is to always be using a 30 week (150 day) and/or 40 week (200 day) weighted moving average. Although it can be used to identify good performing sectors, relative strength is a confirmation of wma stage analysis. If you're going long, you also want to buy just as rel. strength has been rising and is beginning to cross 0 into positive territory. If a sector has been killing the index for months you're limited to continuation buys.
