He's holding it sideways because he's checking for sextant side error prior to taking his sight-- vital to do it every time with a plastic sextant -- and that's a Davis Mk 15 or 25. Right out of the pamphlet Davis ships with it.

@phadil then your an idiot too.try using a compass to get a reverse bearing nimrod.

@johnhar271 i did sometimes using it sideways when i try to find an angle between two landmarks and calculate my position from it. it's easier then using sun and the horizon.

What a widget! If I cought my navigator trying to take a reading holding a sextant sideways......I'd put his ass over board!
