The enigmatic actor's actor, Avery Brooks reprise his starring role as the mysterious hero Hawk in this tv series spin-off from SPENSER FOR HIRE (with the late Robert Urich) fame. Both series are based upon the Spenser character novels by Robert Brown Parker. Stanley Clarke provided the jazzy music theme instrumentals for the series.

Hawk, played by Avery Brooks, moves back to his hometown of Washington, D.C. Hawk is tough and streetwise, a man who is erudite with a booming baritone voice who dresses fly while fighting crime -- despite the fact that he... More lacks the "official" credentials to do so. His mentor and father figure is the "Old Man" (Moses Gunn).

Hawk searches for an old friend and fellow Vietnam War vet turned stressed-out government operative named David Tracton (Vondie Curtis Hall, DIE HARD 2), who has become a killing machine. Hawk's old boss, Col. Edward Stoller, director of covert field operations in U.S. Intelligence asks Hawk to look for Tracton and bring him in before it's too late. Hawk enlists the help of Tracton's half-Vietnamese daughter to save his friend. Tracton is ultimately shot to death at the Jefferson Memorial after Hawk, unaware that he's being followed, leads him there. In this episode, Hawk gives the Old Man a signed, first-edition copy of WEB DuBois' 1903 book "Souls of Black Folk." Angela Bassett also appears in this episode as a high school teacher who could become Hawk's love interest.

  • I agree this is a great episode. Too bad the series didn't last long. Avery Brooks really played the Hawk character great on Spenser for hire. Thanks for posting it. Are there any more episodes anywhere?

  • THe last scene on the steps is classic - where else was there TV acting like this?

  • @22centman36 Lolol yeah man. Darth Vader with Soul Power, definitely human and better looking and on the side of Good...but still unpredictable somehow.

  • @ATACXGYM he was like the dartth vader of the 1980's

  • Nobody rocks the trench, the cannon, the dope wardrobe, the fly dark shades, the bald head, and fly shoes like Hawk. "...I am cogitating upon it furiously. I still owe YOU for the bridge that night...there is a slower DEATH...buuureau...crat!..."

  • thank you soooo much for posting this! I absolutely loved this waaay too short-lived series. This was my favorite show. And the title of this episode is quite appropriate...THE MASTER'S MIRROR. Tracton is Hawk's mirror. Even Hawk said:"There but for the Grace of God..." and the way that Hawk ended this episode:"...whisper in the right ear..." cold cold cold. That brutha was the baddest thing goin,TV or movie screen.Period.

  • thank you soooo much for posting this! I absolutely loved this waaay too short-lived series. This was my favorite show.
