On the 12th of March 2009 we were on Challenger Banks, 15 miles offshore Bermuda. It was a full moon that evening and there were scores of whales feediong on upwellings on the Banks and the Bermuda platform. I believe there are many female humpbacks too young or too old to breed who do not migrate all the way down to the Caribbean for the winter. These females stay around the seamounts on the mid-ocean and opportunistically feed on the upwellings of krill, copepods, decapods, fish eggs and small fish. This is the third year I have studied the humpbacks in Bermuda and it's the third time I've seen a sudden wave of humpbacks feeding here on the full moon. These juvenile female humpbacks were very curious with me but stayed in close formation for security. They swam by, twirled around and came back. As they grew more courageous they started flirting with me, displaying their bellies and coming closer.
your videos are amazing, keep posting for those like myself who cant get the chance to see these beautiful creatures in person :D
