Taken from the BBC broadcast of a 1990 Glyndebourne Festival performance.

Mozart: Marriage of Figaro

Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment
Conductor: Simon Rattle
Production: Peter Hall

Countess Almaviva - Gunnel Bohman

In 1990 the Glyndebourne Festival had a little revolution in its sacred halls: Simon Rattle conducted a production of Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro. What was so special about this production is the fact that for the first time in the festival's history an orchestra of period instruments was used. To up the ante, there was also a radical departure of its 56 year old established performance practice: Mozart was to be performed with full use of appoggiaturas and ornamentation.

  • beautiful rendition.. sounds so fresh and love her ornamentation choices. I'm in a Figaro production this fall and our director forwarded this link. :) Thank you.

I don't know if this was an actual live performance or re-staged for video release but I feel like the camera gets a bit into the action. I wish she didn't look straight on to the camera... this is her talking to herself not to someone.

  • Then I hope you have bought the Telarc Nozze with Mackerras conducting, as it is wonderfully ornamented and beautifully sung. It is also only 17.00 for a 3-CD set. The Rene Jacobs recording is a little too on the expensive (and snooty) side, but it is also a good source for possible ornamentation.

  • Interesting, her voice left me cold. She does do a good job...

  • I'm a huge fan of this performance. The way she attacks the sustained notes in the aria is wonderful - a really frank way of singing, in the manner that Callas advocated for Mozart. And the whole ending is so inspiring.

  • Wonderful vocal production. Very high school and excellent italian diction.

  • Yes, telatc has reissued some of their Mozart recordings for $17 and they are well worth it:

Cosi with Felicity Lott and Jerry Hadley

Don Giovanni with Bo Skovus and Cristine Brewer

Nozze with Carol Vaness and Nucia Focile

Zauberflote with Jerry Hadley and Barbara Hendricks (In my opinion the weaker set)

  • I like her Elsa as well. A very focused and vivid artist. She is very alert, she knows how to give different colours to the words she sings, very commendable!!

  • I agree her voice is beautifull too!

  • beautiful
