Melvin was shot during the 1970's, this video was shot during the 1980's.
Melvin was hospitalized many times during the 1980's for many reasons, most notably for the flesh eating disease that he developed as a result of many years of injections into his legs (knees) to ease the pains associated with dancing, which later claimed his life, you can do a search on the internet for this information.
Much of the storyline in the movie was false, many lawsuits were filed!

I like to consider myself the biggest Temptation fan in the world at 47 years of age.

Melvin wasn't absent because he was shot. The shooting occured in the 70's, when the Tempts were signed to Atlantic Records. However, I can't tell you where he is.

i think melvin was apsent he was shot at some point and had to miss out on the over seas tour i got this from the movie but i could be wrong
