Sorry for this comment - complete noob here! I have XP Professional on my laptop at the mo', but I'm sick and tired of Microsoft. If I want to load Linux (Sabayon) with Beryl as well, do I have to get rid of XP? I'm nervous about downloading it and ruining my laptop which is a fairly old IBM ThinkPad. Any help?

Multiple desktops don't require Beryl or Compiz and have been around for ages. I usually use 4 graphical desktops and occasionally couple of virtual consoles on top of that for CLI fun.
