Lit up, locked up...

The persistent pot protesters who have gathered daily in Central Square for the past several weeks to rally for marijuana decriminalization demonstrated outside City Hall during the festival, attracting the attention of passers-by and police.

Four protesters were arrested for marijuana possession (that's incorrect) during the demonstration that began shortly before 4:20 pm., Keene police Lt. Peter S. Thomas said.

The number 420 is associated with pot smoking, which is why the protesters, who carry signs and bullhorns, gather at the same time every day. Some protesters also carved "420 Every Day" into pumpkins (just me actually) that were displayed during the festival.

The protesters have been known to smoke hand-rolled cigarettes containing tobacco, oregano and other legal substances during the demonstrations, but the four who were arrested during the festival appeared to be smoking the real thing, Thomas said.

Some festival-goers cheered on the protesters, while others said they disapproved of their cause or method. One young man stepped up to the protesters and asked them to stop interrupting the festivities. A brief argument ensued before he walked away.

"There's other ways of doing things," said bystander John Buschbaun of Nelson. "What they should be doing is getting into Congress and getting the laws changed."
