The original WE500 rotary phone bell ringtone

It's amazing how many people use this as their mobile phone's ringtone (and for good reason!), so here's the real thing: a genuine Western Electric 500 rotary dial telephone. And yes, I used another rotary phone (a Trimline phone with the little dial in the handset) to call it.

I had a rotary similar to that when growing up, but I think it was an ITT. I beat the shit out of it, damped the bells and still used it into the late 90's. I seem to recall the phone company coming out in the late 70's and replacing a touch-tone phone with THAT one. I could be wrong, but I know we had the golden beast for a long time. I would like to have one of the phones my Grandparents had from the mid-20th century. I loved them as a kid in the 70's. They weighed about ten pounds!
