'Metropolis Title Sequence, 1927'
First year After Effects project at University was a brief to create the opening title sequence to a film. Preferably a film which didn't have one or could be better.

I choose the 1927 film by Fritz Lang, Metropolis. This silent b/w film is about a city which is run by workers who live underneath it.

  • You can imagine that my comp had over a hundred layers and I had to carefully plan the timing of each line to the music. I had to send the files to a render farm to render because it took way too long at University.

Awarh: Thank-you for your comment, nice to see a bit of criticism. Helps me improve. The music is from the film though so it was the best option to use as I wouldn't been able to compose anything myself.

  • Thank-you everybody who has commented. Much appreciated.

LeenTheGreen: The project was done in After Effects using the build in 'Stroke' plug in. I don't know if you've used after effects before but the basic idea for creating the lines was drawing the outline of the buildings on an adjustment layer with the pen tool then applying the Stroke plug-in to that layer. You can then animate the Start stopwatch on the Stroke plug in to time the drawing of the line.......

  • Watch in high quality, much better.

  • Although i created this title sequence in my first year at uni it still remains one of my favourite pieces of work. Id love to hear what you think about it. Thanks.

  • thats a beautiful piece of work

  • Amazing.

  • this is brilliant. though I prefer the grander, more epic music in the original, the way the lines are letters flow into each other is incredible, almost as if we were seeing the creation of the construction plans for the city, which is really cool.

  • i genuinely thought this was the official title sequence from a remastered version i hadn't heard of. absolutely astoundingly done, beautifully synchronized with the music and the feel of the movie.

  • @jaguarjaguarjaguarja

Bioshock reminds me of metropolis. derp

  • this music is amazing!

    what is it?

  • very nice, it's sort of in the same mood as the film itself, and even has a classy touch to it, reminds me very much of the opening sequence to Fracture, I like the way you use text, it has almost a relaxed attitude, it slips by you somehow, good music, makes the effect unnoticeable until it's too late and we're hooked.

  • wow, I thought it was a real 1927. :)
