Charlie Rose interviewed the late David Foster Wallace, a contemporary American author, on March 27, 1997.

DFW: It is a way—see, this is—
CR: This is what?
DFW: Well I'm just going to look pretentious talking about this. It's—
CR: Why're you—quit worrying about how you're gonna look and just be.
DFW: I have got news for you. Coming on a television show stimulates your what-am-I-gonna-look-like gland like no other experience.

  • i love dfw

  • We desperately need a film maker who writes films which will get anyone to watch it, even if it doesn't sit well with everybody at hoc, but just to get people into watching, because then later the film might settle in their brains and rewrite their neuronal connections as in rewriting the matrix which David Icke talks about. The film is the mass medium unfortunately, not books. For me its books and Internet. But for most people it is movies and that needs to be utilized to the fullest potential.

  • For anyone who wants to write about their experiences, observations and criticism, don't ever be self conscious about the way you write. Just write the way it comes out of your brain. Free flow. Forget about the reactions of others. And don't worry about whether they will read it or not. Just write it down. It will free you. Never be concerned about feed back. Writing is art. Art is your product and nobody else's product. You love your art. You offer it. How they deal with it is their business.

  • I'd forgotten what a prick Charlie Rose can be when interviewing someone.

  • @fc7alibi :(

  • Foster Wallace is such a sweet smart guy and Rose, when he's not asking awful or shallow questions, keeps talking over him and interjecting his own - incredibly banal - opinions. Who does he think he is?

  • I felt terribly for Wallace here. He was obviously in a huge amount of pain.

  • my boy's wicked smat
