2009 News Report :

The idea of harnessing the wind for propulsion power is not a new one. Afterall sailboats have been around for centuries. But what Dan Tracy and his partners want to do is tether big kite sails onto big vessels like barges, cargo ships and commercial fishing boats. When it's windy, unfurl the kite sail cut the ship's engine and cut fuel consumption. The company says its biggest obstacle is Hawaii's dependence on fossil fuel

The governor acknowledged the company's efforts in promoting an alternate energy source. She has honored Kite for Sail with an innovation award. Right now, the company has a small-scale system for testing; an 18 square meter sail towing a 24 foot boat. Eventually, the sail will be more than 16 times that size, or about a tenth of a football field. When the sails are that big, that's when Reza Ghorbani comes in. He's an UH assistant professor with the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

"We are interested in developing a remotely operated system," Ghorbani said, "then the pilot can use a joystick to control the direction of the sail."

  • But the Skysail(tm) company already has robotic controlled kitesails pulling barge ships.

Why completely re-invent something that already exists?
