On the first day of the battle 20,000 soldiers were killed, the highest ever recorded on one day.Between July and November 1916 there were 1.5 million casualties, approximately the population of Dublin. These are the battlefields cemeteries and memorials created by the Battle of the Somme. It was supposed to be the war to end all wars.If only that were true.

  • my grandfather died in the battle of the somme he was never found:( i only saw one picture of him in the army suit with his friends

  • If my history is correct the Germans tunneled under the lines and blew it up for the "great offensive" however they were short in their calculations. I think I am correct however land wars in WW1 Are Not my strong point. You did a nice Job on this vid Dawg. Thank-you !!

  • Gorlice 1915 is better much better !

  • This really is stunning, very well put together. A fitting tribute to the brave and the not so brave, I'm sure there were a lot more of the latter when their time came.
