Teach Cantonese together Mandarin for Cantonese children in Guangdong ,it is way to protect Cantonese while still can communicate with other chinese by Mandarin.

Cantonese is most closest to fujianese,both are mix of han chinese and yue tribes

Cantonese = Baiyue

Fujianese = Minyue

An cantonese speaker have the same tonal as vietnamese speaker but it can not guess or understand any vietnamese words,on the other hand it can guess 5% of mandarin words from north chinese.An cantonese speaker can never understand any mandarin speaker in a conversation.Mostly because of their pronunciation and tonal that is very different from cantonese and a lot of words are also different too.

I seriously doubt people only know mandarin and NOT cantonese? hong kong has the world 3rd biggest movie industry after hollywood and bollywood,and has international success,almost all movies are in cantonese.Even the world first 3D porn movie that came out few weeks ago is in cantonese language.Besides most of famous asian hollywoods are cantonese speakers from hong kong.Genetically speaking most cantonese are mostly MIXED of han chinese and baiyue, some are sinicized baiyue but most are not.

Many famous Cantonese became chinese,and most chinese became Mandarin.

So It is reason why people only know Mandarin ,not know Cantonese.

And Cantonese should come back to Baiyue origin.Yue is great and not barbaric as Han lies.

Ancestor of BAiyue is shennong, not huangdi of chinese.

Protect Cantonese before too late.

@masterofbows Cantonese is mixture of han chinese and yue people, although we properbly have slightly more yue blood han,but we are still mix of both. Our cantonese culture and language is different from mandarin north han chinese but still more related to them. Bruce lee was cantonese but he called himself chinese, many world famous chinese are cantonese origin.
