EUHR Ashton on satellite jamming by Libya, Iran

European Union foreign ministers urged Iran on Monday to stop jamming European satellite transmissions and said they were prepared to take action to put an end to the interference.

Iranian authorities have been jamming foreign satellite broadcasts into their territory since late last year, with broadcasters such as the BBC and Deutsche Welle affected. Access to the Internet for Iranian citizens has also been affected.

"The EU calls on the Iranian authorities to stop the jamming of satellite broadcasting and Internet censorship and to put an end to this electronic interference immediately," EU foreign ministers said in a joint statement at a meeting in Brussels.

Iran has ratified an international convention banning electronic interference with broadcasts yet still stepped up its Internet crackdown and surveillance amid a disputed presidential election last summer.
