The denigration of fathers seemed clear when the panelists from the September 12, 2008, "Real Time with Bill Maher" entered the "Overtime" discussion that's only broadcast on HBO's website to talk about the suitability of mothers to be Vice President.

You can see the rest of the "Overtime" discussion among panelists Roseanne Barr, Janeane Garofalo, Salman Rushdie, and John Fund using a link from HBO's "Real Time with Bill Maher" webpage at http://www.hbo.com/billmaher/

You can see the first page of the 1994 article in the Journal of Marriage and the Family titled "Parental Gender Role Nontraditionalism and Offspring Outcomes" at http://www.jstor.org/pss/353599

  • Women are better at making breast milk hands down. Now here is my angle. I am a single father of four. As far as I am concerned men are excellent caregivers. Fathers such as myself face sexism every day. Women can no more accept men as equal primary caregivers then the plantation owners could accept the recently freed black slaves as equals. The reason is their prejudice runs too deep. I am always complimented on well behaved and happy my children are.

  • First of all, Roseane is an idiot. . Hands down, an idiot. And as for who is the better parent. It depends on the individual not the gender. There are good mothers and bad fathers and good fathers and bad mothers, etc. It depends on the individual parent not the gender You cant have your cake and eat it too. If we're going to be equal in all things then lets be equal in all things.

  • @LiberalViewer From a linguistic POV there is ONE area where mothers are better than fathers, which is in teaching children how to speak. Mothers and child's phoneme are in all cases almost 100% aligned. Infants also respond immediately when their mother enters the room & often ignore the father, even if he was taking care of them while mom was at work. However, this doesn't say anything about who's a better parent.

  • It all depends on the individuals of course. However, everything being equal I would say men would be better parents, because men are more rational, stable and consistent. They are better able to prioritize, are more realistic and are less prone to phobia's, neuroses and general flakiness!

  • I don't think its wise to weigh roles by gender. Aptitude depends on the individual.

  • Women are not better primary care-givers than men! As all men know (whom are 40 or older) women are unstable, inconsistent, irrational, illogical, confused and scared of the weirdest things! How on earth could they be better care-givers? I grant them the milk, OK!

  • one is not necessarily better than the other, based on gender. I think that there may be some evidence, somewhere, to support the argument that children are more likely to do better, either short-term or long-term, if they have a good bond with mom early in life, but that's not to say it's always best for everyone, by any means.

  • @halboski I couldn't have said it better myself.

  • Saying that women automatically are better at raising children is absolute bullshit and of course is complete sexism. I am 18 years old and my brother and I were raised my the most wonderful and completely devoted father anyone could ever ask for. My mother ran out on me and my brother when I was only 6 years old and haven't heard from her since. This lady has no idea the kind of prejudice and sexist remarks that she is spewing. I am a living testament to that fact that she is a complete idiot.

  • I would have much rather of lived with my father growing up.
