The City of Kelowna unveiled it's new logo in July to mixed reviews. Many thought the money was wasted, that a contest for a logo could have had better PR relation while some wondered how is it that at a time of economic down turn the city can find large sums of money for something frivolous?
At times the civic leaders of Kelowna act like they do not comprehand the difficulties that many people face, recently it was widly reported that Kelowna has more than 140 civil cervants who earn more than $75,000 per year - so it would appear that there is a two tiered life in Kelowna, the haves and have nots.
Now it appears that a company in the USA developed a logo that the City of Kelowna logo bares an uncanny resemblance to. Coincidence? Money well spent?
Most logos produced by low grade designers look like something else. This sort of design is complicated and derivative. At least it isn't some kind of figure 8 or swooping oval. Those are done to death.

No conincidence. In copyrights, there is a certain percentage of similarities that would be considered to be plagiarism. In this case the similarties are a big percentage, I would guess 80%? Of couse the design is very common to spirographs, but the colours similarity is outstanding! Thanks for posting this, I didn't watch the news. I have posted my thoughts about this logo at castanets forum before. Now is really revolting.

Sad that so much was spent. If it was so important to change the logo, why not just have had a contest open to the community. Winner gets $5000 or something like that. As for changing all the stationary and signs - do it by attrition. Someone sold someone a big story about how they needed to spend this money to "brand" Kelowna.

The odds are pretty good AGAINST that being a coincidence. It looks like every bit of the money spent on the logo was a waste. If you search the harddrive of the graphic designer who did it you'll probably find a copy of the other logo. Probably the design team is in bed with some of your local politicians.
