Reel Spirituality
By Robert K. Johnston (Picnic at Hanging Rock Director: Peter Weir)
Or again, Weir has said that in Picnic at Hanging Rock, The grand theme was Nature, and even the girls sexuality was as much a part of that as the lizard crawling across the top of the rock. They were part of the same whole; part of larger questions. Hanging Rock itself a volcanic eruption that has forced itself up from the earths crust. It represents the untamed forces of nature. It is a symbol for a more ancient knowledge (like the aboriginal dreamtime in The Last Wave) that provides the schoolgirls entrance into adulthood. The primitive power of Nature over ongoing life is announced with the credits. On the screen we read, On Saturday 14 February 1900, a party of schoolgirls from Appleyard College picnicked at Hanging Rock near Mt. Macedon in the State of Victoria. During the afternoon, several members of the party disappeared without a trace. Nature simply engulfed them. No answers are provided in the movie about what happened or where they went. Not even a coherent story is related. Rather, Weir is content to present the problem. Nature does not always give up her secrets.
Picnic at Hanging Rock presents humankinds total helplessness when confronted with the inexplicable.
