Besides being adorable and cute Vanessa, your video is informative and helpful. Montuno is one of my favorite rhythms for piano. I play drums and I love to solo over this rhythm. Thanks.

Outstanding - thanks! Great teaching style, perfect pace, helpful addition of the clave in the corner - just perfect. Cant wait to work on this and to learn more.
¡Muchísima gracias, @jcfreites! Entendí sí, you just made my day :)

@galliumarsenide: it's a subtle difference; the phrasing is in groups of 2 bars, the '2' side of the clave and the '3' side. All phrasing should anticipate the '3' side by one 8th note (I discuss this more in tutorials #2 & #3).
The reason the 1st ex. is wrong is that the phrases in both bars start directly on the down beat; as a general rule (I say general because there are always variations and exceptions), the groove dies in its tracks if you start phrasing on the down beat in both bars.

Thanks for the feedback!! I'll post soon about 3:2 clave and about some more rhythmic options/variations to build on the basic tumbao. In the mean time, check out my latest video, which is a really close look at the montuno from Yuri Buenaventura's Mala Vida:
