My Big fat Punjabi Wedding-Hijra's Dance

Hedra's perform the morning after my wedding. you do not have to invite them,somehow they know when weddings occur. they showed up about 9 am. imagine a band and dancers outside your door singing..certainly an interesting addition to my exaustion and hangover! They take away the evil eye and bring blessings to a newly married couple or a new baby. One group is assigned to a district to perform. there were 15 in this group. i was told that if a couple gives birth to a baby and the baby is born as a both sexes, a hermaphradite,then the baby is given to the hijras to raise. the hijras carry a unique status in india.

i remember this used to be a regular feature in lahore weddings and births as well. the last i saw was at my nani's house in 1988. its changed now though and may be the activity exists in smaller towns but not in lahore at least. quite sad actually, since the hejra dances were my first encounter with them and one learns about the variety in this world and how to respect it. Thank you for the post, took me down memory lane:)

i think they pay the postman to know when the weddings happen..each district has an order as to which band of hidras goes where..to ease turf battles..it is very interesting.

LOL call them whatever you want but they are gay men in dresses! It's just an easier way to accept homosexuality. Same in Iran you can only be gay if you have a sex change. Sad but it's the truth
