  • Why does he play with music here?

  • @Yamsareverytasty I guess he was sight-reading. :P

  • @madlovba3 wouldn't surprise me, but if he's truly studied the music I thought he would have memorized it. Not often you see hamelin sight reading in a concert :D

  • @Yamsareverytasty Well, he did master it as we can hear, but maybe he didn't have enough time to memorize the score, and didn't want to get lost in the thicket of harmonies. (I guess this latter one was his reason to play Godowsky etudes with score, in the Supervirtuoso Documentary.) He's a monster sight reader, btw - I once read that he used to sight read Liszt etudes as a lad of 16 o_O

  • @codonauta Moreover, all pianists use the score when making recordings. It has nothing to do with not having "truly studied" the piece.

  • @AulicExclusiva Clara Schumann was one of the first pianist to play without the score in front of, but this in the his early years. When the time was passing, she started to play with the score. The same happened to Richter. It was the problem of the memory, which gets worse when the pianist is getting older. It is natural.

  • @Yamsareverytasty Clara Schumann and Sviatoslav Richter always played with the sheet music before them. I guess neither of them had "truly studied the music" they played...

  • @madlovba3 whew, no wonder he can play so incredibly. What's the need to practise a piece if you can sight read it? haha. He also appears to be sight reading the medtner sonata romantica scherzo in the supervirtuoso documentary, which is phenomenally difficult at best of times.

  • @StockhausenIsMyCat Boulez+Stockhausen!? Yuck... lol no seriously, I have a recording of him playing Stockhausen's Klavierstück IX and it's beautiful - really, it quite convinced me some of his works have real music value :P

Petrov's recording of the Liszt/Paganini is very decent. But he should record Medtner Concerti, definitely! Have you heard his PC2? Astonishing!

In an interview, MAH mentioned he was gonna record Busoni, and when a friend of mine asked Hyperion they said what I told you :)

  • @madlovba3 >since I hate the Boulez :P

well MAH and I disagree! :-) So then a cd you might perhaps like even less: Boulez sonata + a selection of Stockhausen klavierstucke!

As for Ligeti that would be nice indeed but since there are quite good versions I would rather suggest Liszt/Paganini version 1838...

Btw how do you know all that about the Busoni sonatinas?
